We zijn al een behoorlijke tijd bezig met alle voorbereidingen: auto kopen en naar NL laten verschepen. Hierna ophalen uit Zeebrugge en inschepen. We hebben hem niet ingevoerd omdat dat nogal wat geld zou kosten en we toch weer weggaan.

Hierna hebben we hem naar Joop gebracht en daar zijn we bezig gegaan met het nakijken en opknappen. Het is ons erg meegevallen. Met z'n tweeen kunnen we hard doorwerken en zeker Lance is niet te stoppen (koffiepause van 5 min is lang genoeg haha.)

Toch kan je dan in relatief korte tijd veel bereiken: motor nagekeken (distributieriem was goed,v-snaar vernieuwd+ waterpomp), alle filters vervangen,olie ververst (van de 3 differentielen,motor en versnellingsbak). Daarna kwam wel het karwei waar Lance en ik het meest tegenop keken: Electra!

Maar gelukkig: daar was Leendert en hij heeft ons erg geholpen om er uiteindelijk toch iets moois en vertrouwds van te maken. Want het was een gigantische onoverzichtelijke puinhoop. Veel doorgebrande draden achter het dashbord (iets wat je echt niet wil!!!) en er zat totaal geen logica in de verbindingen. Nu hebben we een mooi dual battery system met gescheiden mogelijkheden om onze verlichting en koelkast (ja een heel grote! ;)) op aan te sluiten.

Verder hebben we de auto nog gepimpt: met raster bescherming voorop tegen steenslag, een ware douche (projectje van Lance, Maurice is toch maar een bunzing ;p) gasflessen op het dak, extra brandstof tanks en watertanks op het dak, een water filter systeem, het interieur mooi gemaakt waaronder een nu weer werkende radio, een keuken ingebouwd en een ruimte voor reparatie materiaal.

Al met al heeft het ons redelijk wat tijd gekost maar het is de moeite waard! De auto ziet er nu goed uit, we weten hoe die in elkaar zit en we vertrouwen hem nu ook. Aansluitend hebben we nog een 4x4 cursus gevolgd die Lance voor zijn verjaardag heeft gekregen van zijn Leidse vrienden. Dit was een topkado want hier hebben we veel aan gehad. Daar hebben we met onze auto al diverse mensen moeten helpen en die van ons doorstond de grootste uitdagingen.

Nu is het wachten op onze visa, we houden jullie op de hoogte!

Well this is my first actual post on the Blogwith any usefull information and itis adequatelynamed Preperation.

When youdecide to make a trip like this you don't really know where to start anda huge help has been the Africa Overland book by Brandt. In it it details the preperations that will need to be made. A true lifesaver.

It all started with the Buying and Shipping of the Defender from South Africa to Holland. I can tell you that this was no easy feat. First of all it took us aprox. 5 months to get the car papers from the previous owner. After uncountable e-mails and phone calls to him (with the nessesary verbal abuse) we finally got them. After this we needed to organise a Carnet de Passage which is a temporary import permit for the countires we will be travelling through. This my dad arranged for us as well.

Then the shipping. We first arranged a company to ship the car to Amsterdam. When we were ready, we contacted them for a shipping date but were told that they had just been declared bankrupt! Great!On to look for the next shipping agency.

We eventually found one 'viking shipping'in Durban but they could only ship the car to Zeebrugge in Belgium and not to Amsterdam. Luckily Europe is quite small, and Zeebrugge is about an 2 hours drive from Leiden.

We picked up the car on the 28th of Septmber. This was the first time that we both saw her! I must say that my very first impression was 'Is this going to get me to South Africa?'

But after driving her to Hengelo where Maurice had arranged a fantastic garage where we could work on the car (Thanks Joop) I had allready fallen in love and was sure that the Defender would not only get us to South Africa but also with hardly any trouble at all!

We started preparing the car for our trip in early November, first changing all the oils (diff,engine gearbox etc etc.) and then the waterpump, fuelpump and and fanbelt. We also checked the timming belt. It all was going pretty smoothly....for now!

Seeing as I live about 2 hours drive from Hengelo where thedefender was being kept I could only be there to work on it every 2nd week or so. Maurice lives there and could work on it more often. So when he phoned one day and said that Leendert ( a friend of his) and him had found a major problem with the wiring I thought that he was maybe exagerating just a little

Unfortunately he was not and as you can see in some of the photo's on the blog we had to open up the dashboard and do some extensive rewiring!! Luckily Leendert was there and helped us to get it all done and I must say it looks very profesional now.

After this we went on a 4x4 course that I was given as a birthday present by my mates in Leiden, thanks guys! We went there and put our trusty Landrover through a lot. But she performed perfectly. On our way home we were now confident that we could tackle all road conditions in Africa!

The last month we've been mainly concentrating on the extrasand have tested our water purification system, built in our Shower( Roadshower.com) for those interested. Stocked our portable kitchen and ordered all spares and tools for the trip.

At the end of December our Landrover was ready for the trip. Ahead of schedule!

We are now busy with our visa's Syria and Ethiopia are approved now we are waiting on the Sudanese visa(Applied 4 mothes ago!) the rest of the visas we will get on our way down.

Now we are busy getting all our vaccinations and getting together all the otherhundreds of bits and pieces that we will need.

After a year of preperations we have come so far and now I'm ready to start the Safari!
